with this postcard the bench almost becomes personified as experiencing the environment itself by being on the sidewalk and being clearly different and more lively than the bench in the background. It seems to be standing at an entry point asking if I would like to experience his world. Also this environment seems very manmade and unlike a natural park. The domestication of the outdoors and nature itself may also be an underlying message when it comes to the bench. Bench is a manmade familiarity that can be put into environments to make humans feel more comfortable in the surroundings of the woods.
"Bench is a manmade familiarity that can be put into environments to make humans feel more comfortable in the surroundings of the woods." I agree. Originally I wasn't thinking in this way. I was merely giving the bench a ground to sit on. To me, benches are a friendly place where you should feel comfortable sitting down. In the image you sent me first, I was to scared to sit down on that bench.
After stepping back, reading your comment, and studying the image I sent you, I like the way that you're thinking. I realized that people really don't NEED benches. We could just as easily sit down on the ground wherever we want...sans-bench. The bench is something that was thought-up by mankind, in order to make people feel more comfortable sitting in the outdoors. It's kind-of stupid when you think about it.
i agree and the new bench idea is in response for me failing to show you what I meant in the first card I would have liked to take it into the direction of replacing benches with rocks or fallen trees, but I have decided to take it in the opposite direction because your postcards composition struck something in my head.
The bench is a tool of experiencing nature and if your not going to take advantage of a man made device in nature why even have it there. So the new bench would be a clear reminder of mans encroachment on nature and an interactive experience that involves them in nature. It in itself is a little bit of an oxymoron.
